Abstract
Depression is characterized by difficulties in disengaging attention from information, and it is expected to interfere with emotion regulation. This study compared the differences between a depressive group and a control group in attention bias and examined whether disengagement bias mediates the relationship between recovery resilience and depression. Depressive group(N=24) and control group(N=21) were recruited. Self-report questionnaires and the spatial cueing task measuring attention bias were administered. The stimuli in the spatial cueing task were presented at 250ms and 1250ms, and it consisted of disengagement bias and engagement bias scores. The results showed significant group differences between the depressive and control groups in depression, resilience, and disengagement bias at the 250ms condition. Disengagement bias at the 250ms condition mediated the relationship between resilience and depression. However, disengagement bias at the 1250ms condition did not show significant group differences or mediation effects. This study is the first to examine the relationship between resilience, depression, and attention bias in adults with depressive disorder in Republic of Korea. The study suggests that modifying attention bias to negative information and enhancing resilience may have beneficial effects in alleviating depressive symptoms.
